Just wanted to point out...
...both Rackers and Hillenmeyer say that the final field goal attempt grazed off Hillenmeyer's fingertips. So, maybe it's not complete luck. Also interesting to note, the Cardinals long snapper (Nathan Hodel) and Racker's were teammates here at Illinois. Rackers set the single season scoring record at Illinois in his final season, 1999 (also known as the Year I Became a Football Fan). Scientists?
This entry is my humble (we all know that I'm not an opinionated guy, or anything) follow-up to: http://bigcat.chaosnet.org/archives/2005/02/scientists.htmlAs we all know, I "catch up" on LJ about once a month. And I skim until I find something that makes me post. Now, there's been a lot of things going on in people's lives, but what I'm going to talk about is science. Again. Yes, again. It's just how I'm put together. Cut, for your protection ( Read more... )That is all. Thank you, and good night, Goodknight. Current Mood: thoughtful | | Thursday, December 23rd, 2004 | | 1:02 am |
In a field full of shit merchants...(personal communication, C.H., 2003)
The lack of anything even remotely resembling science (or even the base rationale of anything approaching a responsible epistemological framework) in popular psychology burns my bacon. To wit: ( Social Science-based rant follows... )Oh, and with that, I apologize for endorsing the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator in these pages some time ago. While the MBTI can be fun, it's no more than a toy. As a psychological measure, though widely used, it leaves a great deal to be desired. As for good personality measures, you're better off with some Big-5 instrument. Not as fun, but far more valid and reliable. | | Saturday, October 23rd, 2004 | | 5:45 pm |

Mandarin Wok Fish with Black Pepper and Egg. (Possibly known as Num fish) Oh, so good. Bit expensive, but worth it. Every penny. | | Thursday, October 21st, 2004 | | 11:12 pm |
Hmmm....a year ago...
...a year ago, I was talking about how much the Cubs and Red Sox suck. This is a natural reaction. This year, I do not get to talk about how much the Red Sox suck. This is a good thing. However, I am a Sox B fan. They're my "other" team. You know, the one you like, but aren't quite so....well, you know, about. Anyway, I am truly happy that the Bo Sox are in the World Series. This is, as I said above a good thing. I've even been walking around in a BoSox cap since my stats professor loaned it to me to tweak my division coordinator, a big Yankees fan (this came as a SHOCK to me, actually. Someone I actually respect...a Yankees fan! I feel dirty, oh so dirty). Anyway, the point of this post.... Opportunity to HEAVILY mock chompiamagator DENIED. damn you, cards. My colleagues have been alerted that I fully intend to be mostly useless until the series is over. Hmmm...beer. I think I should pick up some Sam Adams. Indeed. work work work work work work work work work
So, I have been working my metaphorical balls off lately. You know, I like to be out of the office by 8pm or so, in general. Actually, I like to not work past 5. I haven't had that happen yet, since classes started. Sometimes it feels like everyone needs a little piece of you. Some friends helped me see that that is not always a bad thing, sometimes all they want is your company. And that's nice. I'm beginning to build friendships that are with people that will still be here, even after May. I've been thinking alot about that month. Most of my closest friends will be gone by then. Many have already moved on; many I left behind when I decided that this place wasis the right one for me. My very best friend is becoming a Roman Catholic Priest. I remember seeing him in his roman collar for the first time at Easter. It was rather shocking. My best friends are strewn all over the country now. Maryland, Texas, Florida, California, Minnesota now, even deep Wisconsin. Some are still here, some are near, in the Chicago area or still at home. Others are scattered around Illinois, here's looking at you folks in DeKalb and Galva. With so many people moving on with their lives, and a new group of freshmen that look so young that they make me wonder how they are possibly in college, I've been thinking a lot. Maybe this is why they encourage you to go to another school for your PhD; the culture shock counterbalances the system shock. I look around, and everything is still Illinois, but it's not my Illinois anymore. I found out today that one of my professors has given some of my undergrads the mistaken impression that I am some kind of genius. Whoa. I don't want to be the standard... I spent so much time today advising people on what to think about when they're applying to graduate school. Some of them are so young, it seems. How was that me just a year ago? BTW, walking around campus at 11:30pm with a backpack and a coffee cup is a great way to get spat at and insulted. Try to avoid it. meh. i'm out of invective for now. | | Sunday, August 15th, 2004 | | 3:40 pm |
Sunday, Booooring Sunday!!!!
So, I'm sitting in lab. I've been here a long damn time. I am encoding mpegs of the video I shot 2 weeks ago. It blows. It takes fjucking forever on these machines. But, oh well. I don't have anything better to do, except maybe unpack. And do laundry. And dishes. And, that bathroom could use cleaning. So, as far as it goes, the new apartment does seem like it could feel like home soon. I mean, I had a squirrel wake me up the other day, and we've got room to grill. And we gots this big concrete slab right outside the porch/balcony thing that will be great for party dealies, you know like the big, bad bachelor bash Tuesday. The rooms are small, and I've got a LOT of shit, I realize, mostly books. I'm sure it'll be comfortable once we all get settled. I've been assigned an office. No key yet, hopefully I can move in to it early next week. I should have known I'd get that office, since it's the one I like the very least on the second floor. Ha! But, regardless, it's 228 Psychology Building. Not a bad location, really, inside corner, overlooking the atrium. I'm really looking forward to the semester. Hit the ground running, as it were. Well, we'll just see. | | Monday, August 9th, 2004 | | 9:41 pm |
On the Frontlines....of the Soda/Pop War....
So, I was driving back from Chicago today, listening to Q101, and...wtf!!!...they were saying "soda"!!!! GRRRRARRRRGH!!! What does this mean???? A chicago radio station, saying "soda", I wanted to call in, and say "Don't you mean 'pop'?" but, to no avail. Curses! The apocalypse I have prophesied may be closer than we think!
